The advantage of proton therapy

As a positive charge particle, proton enters into human body with very high speed. Due to its high speed, the chance of the interaction with normal tissues or cells is very low. When it reaches it¡¯s range at specified tumor site, its speed is slowed down suddenly and release maximum energy (Generated Bragg peak) and the tumour cells are killed. When the tumour surrounded with critical normal tissues and organs, and other alternative treatment modalities are useless, proton therapy shows its huge advantages. For the tumours far away from critical organs, proton therapy can increase radiation dose to the target, therefore increase the cure rate.

When implementing conventional radiotherapy, the surrounding normal tissue also receives certain radiation dose. Because the limitation of radiation dose of normal tissues, the safety dose of tumour is limited. This tumour safety dose rarely kills the tumour tissue completely. When implementing proton therapy, the dose in front of tumour is very low and the dose to downstream of tumour is zero, almost no normal tissue injury. This makes the dose to tumour region reach maximum, gave the tumour tissues enough strike. This stereotactic precise ¡°guided, localized explosion¡± technique assures the degree of precision of proton therapy, improves the curative effects and cure rate. This can not be realized with conventional techniques. The international reports a group of patients showed that no recurrence within the treatment target in proton therapy of gliomas.

Other radiotherapy techniques can not comparable with the advantages of proton beam and the advance of proton therapeutic technique. It can be used for all types of malignant tumours, especially for ocular tumours, deep-seated large tumour volume and the tumours grouped as low radiosensitivity to conventional radiation (X-rays, electrons and ¦Ã-rays). However, this technique is only implementing in big physics laboratory in a few highly developed countries, due to the high cost of the facility and the high techniques requirement.
